Responsible Farming

While researching about aquaculture for my research paper, I came across many positive effects it brings to bodies of water.  It promotes a more diverse population of sea creatures and it enriches the water itself.  Ponds and lakes that contain fish farms are much more clean than those who do not; however, that is only possible through responsible aquaculture.
Many fish farms are not producing fish in a way that is both efficient and safe for the environment.  They end up sucking up the oxygen out of the water and creating dead zones in the water where no fish is able to survive.  From the Ted Talk "How I Fell in Love With a Fish", Dan Barber tells about his trip to a fish farm in Spain that is "doing it right".  The farm there revolves around a healthy economic relationship with the environment; in fact, they do not even feed their fish because the environment feeds them naturally. The fish eat the shrimp and algae and the birds that prey on the fish show if the fish is unhealthy or not.  If the birds refuse to eat the fish then obviously there is something wrong which also means we don't end up getting diseased fish in the market. This kind of system is not only healthy and efficient, but is safe for both the environment and us.
