GMO Labeling
One of the reasons why large companies refuse to label their foods as genetically modified is because they claim that it will cost them more. Although they claim this is one of the effects of labeling genetically modified foods, this is not the case. The problem is way bigger than this, but they are simply using this as a way to distract consumers from realizing that they don't want to label this food because there may be long term effects associated with genetically modified food. Large companies change their labels frequently, but there is never a change in price. How many times have you seen companies advertising the "new look" of their packaging? Plenty of times, but neither consumers nor companies suffer from increasing prices. A couple of printed words is not a good enough claim to stop consumers from wanting these foods labeled. Some companies are claiming that separating GMO and non GMO foods will cause an increase in price as well, but this isn't true either because "the supply chain already separates GMO and non-GMO foods"(Faber 7). Almost all supermarkets separately group their fruits, vegetables, cereals, snacks, drinks, etc. If some cereals are genetically modified, then most of them will be, considering there are only a couple of large companies that control most of the cereals. Another example is the organic sections. Obviously, organic foods don't contain GMOs and are therefore already separated. For the most part, companies set their prices based on "ingredients, labor and energy costs, not the cost of label changes"(8). Although it has been proven that labeling will not impact large companies, they will do whatever it takes to avoid revealing the use of genetically modifies foods to consumers.

The more I read about GMOs, the scarier it gets. I do agree with you on your stand about if companies can change the way their products look, that they should be able to label whether or not their foods contain GMOs. For them to say it's a pricy argument to change the look and the labeling of their products that contain GMOs just doesn't make sense as you pointed out. As consumers, we have the right to know what we are eating; therefore, there should be guidelines put in place stating if products contain GMOs or not. I think as time goes on, and as the consumers are more aware with what is going on in the food industry, things will eventually have to change.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really good post about a very important topic in todays society, especially since the number of industrial scale farms are limited. GMO's are a big part in what most people eat, whether they know it or not. These large companies change their packaging, as you said, and they change their sales tactics to appeal to a larger audience. Even if they include more in the labeling, it's not going to damage them, as you pointed out because most of society, especially nowadays don't really even care about what they put in their bodies and don't even look at the label. You wrote this in such an exquisite way, you really break it down into the simple facts and truths. and that is what I really like. I think big companies should just put everything on the label because, to me, it doesn't seem like it would hurt them in the long run. Great Post
