Changing the Way We Think
In all honesty, this unit has made me realize that the food industry isn't as trustworthy as we were led to believe; in addition, there is a problem with the FDA moving a little too slow for the people of the US to be safe from the ignorant ways of food companies. But with all of this new information, there is an idea for a course of action that we as a community can take to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the food industry. Now, there was a Ted Talk that we watched as a class that really inspired me to make a change for my community as well. In this Ted Talk, community growers would gather together and plant vegetables and fruits and other edible items. This action enabled them to not only provide for themselves, but to insure that they are not receiving any harmful chemicals or products. This isn't something that can be done over night, nor is it something I intend to achieve within the next week, but this one man's idea led to multiple ideas of my own. We as a community need to come together to start becoming educated on what the food industry is giving us. Not only is this a good place to start, but it guides people into choosing various options when it comes to their health. Educating people on what the food industry provides, can lead to a community moving and pushing towards a healthier lifestyle and push lower income areas to achieve higher goals within their own homes. From education, we can move into action. As soon as their are an enough amount of people that want their community to change, then they may move onto to gaining healthier items in their local grocery stores, or they may in fact hold farmers markets to receive healthier foods through an easier course of action. From then on, people will become stronger, not only in their health due to the type of foods they are now obtaining, but through the knowledge they are gaining. None of the changes that occur in a community happen without knowledge, and this piece of wisdom goes with anything and everything, not just the idea of a healthier community. All in all, people need to become educated on what they are putting into their mouths (and this goes a lot further than just reading the label on a bag of chips). As long as people take the time to learn about how their food is made, then there is a chance to change the community.

Hey Jennafer, I really like this post. I agree that we must join together as a community in order to make a change. If consumers individually stop purchasing unhealthy foods, others are still going to continue doing what they always have. As a group, we can slowly start to avoid buying unhealthy food from large companies. This will show them, that we are aware of what is in our food; therefore, they could start making changes in what chemicals they put in our food. Informing other people on this issue will also help, that is why I find this unit to be so interesting and informational. If all seniors are learning about this, it will be easier to make a difference. After learning about all of this, I feel the need to do something about it, but change is hard.

ReplyDeleteI believe that some companies pay local friends in the FDA in order for them to overlook the way our food is being treated. The government and FDA don't do enough to protect us from the harmful substances in our every day meals. Many people don't think that companies can buy off local government workers in order to get what they want, but after everything that's been happening how can you not believe that? Educating people is a start to better ourselves and change the way we eat. I also believe that as a community we can start our own garden like the one in Ted Talks. This will help us understand the process of our food and how it is made the natural way. One day we will come to the point where our community will have it's garden and people will feed their bodies food that will actually benefit their health.
