The constant cold of Gethen contribute to the theme of isolation and loneliness because Ali is lost in this planet. For instance, the weather in Gathen is really cruel it's really cold and the day is really short. Imagine going to an environment that you're never been and it's really cold that its makes you feel isloated. "The Left hand of darkness" provided us information about the planet like "it starts on the 44th diurnal of the year 1491, which on the planet Winter in the nation Karhide" (Pg 2). Sadly, Genly Ai is a lonely character because he is consider an Alain and no one believe him. I'm aware he is not from a different planet but you would think people would be amused to meet an Alain. Also, Ai explains "Life on winter is hard to live, and people there generally leave death to nature or to anger, not law" (pg 52). According to the book it seems th weather kills many people. If you think about it people in this planet are lonely because they don't know who would die next it can be there parents or siblings. Unfortunately, Ai try's to introduce some equipment and get some answer from the king yet he fails in his mission. The king says "Now take you're traps and tricks and go, there's no more needs saying" (Pg 40). This proves my point that he is lonely and isn't taken serious. For example, If someone moves to a country and doesn't know anyone im sure there's gonna be lonely and depressed. However, Ai has to travel to a different country to find answer and later on his mission he crosses a cam called "acommunal farm center." People get killed and there home gets destroyed.
The harsh weather change has a huge impact on Genly because her has to adapt to the new climate and worry about being accepted by the Gethenian people as well. I also believe that it was a major disappointment to Genly when the King did not want to adapt his ideas of communication and trade between the planets. After that kind of let down, it would be very discouraging and cause him to feel even more alone and misunderstood. Although, he was rejected he continued to go to the next nation and had better luck that time around because they are more open to the idea of Genly. They are interested in what he may have to offer which can help Genly feel less alone and isolated, despite the difference of environment.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he is feeling alone and isolated because of these climate conditions. As odd as it seems, it makes sense that not being used to the weather could make one feel isolated. Unfortunately I'm going to have to disagree with the idea that people are lonely because they do not know when their family would die. We, as earthlings, are unsure when anyone will die, yet we do not let this affect us. This mystery of death is just a part of life that all living has to deal with. Moreover, here's a quick correction: Genly is from a different planet. Ai is from Earth and he is visiting this planet, that is why he is considered an alien.
