The book takes place on a planet where it's cold and the gender's are weird. its difficult to understand that these aliens are neither male nor female until kemmering. Genly Ai becomes very confused from the sexuality of the Gethinains. This is where Genly Ai feels isolated and more of an outsider. Just how someone visits a country, they feel isolated from people. Exactly how Ai is, he's tall, different skin color, gender, and most importantly he's from Earth.
