LHOD Wave 1

When Genly Ai arrived in Winter he noticed how the different the planet was. The planet was ice cold and the weather was always freezing. Genly Ai wasn't used to this kind of weather. In chapter3 page 28 it talked about how Genly wasted most of his jewels by just buying clothes to survive in this planet. To the Gethenians this weather was normal and they have no complaints towards, but Genly wasn't used to being in the same season all the time. In chapter 1 Genly noticed how different he was from the Gethenians. He was much taller and darker than the rest of them which made him noticeable when he wasn't in crowds. The Gethenians also have bigger noses than he does. Even though they have some physical differences Genly can still get his way by in Karhide. On page 35 the king asks Genly if all the people on his world are as black as him and he responds with "Some are blacker, we come all colors." He also mentioned that Gethenians are yellow-brown or red-brown, but there are some as dark as himself. Genly has been in Karhide for a while now and he still can't get over the fact how their society works. He doesn't understand kemmering which makes him call the society a bisexual society (ch. 1). He can't tell the difference between a man or a women on the street because they all look the same which confuses him. In ch. 1 when Estraven invited him to his house he noticed how feminine Estraven was acting towards him. Genly couldn't imagine Estraven as a women yet he didn't really see him as a man. He couldn't get over his feminine actions which leads to how he reacts towards the whole society. In Genly's society he sees men and women who can't switch genders, so coming to a new society where no one has a gender and can portray one when they are going to bond confuses him. He's simply just can not get use to the Gethians society which tends to frighten some of the citizens of Winter which makes his mission more impossible.
