Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can hurt me too

Words do have the ability to hurt a person. They may not physically hurt a person like sticks and stones, but they have the ability to lead to physical pain. As a kid I never thought that words can actually hurt you. I thought it was impossible for a word jump out of my paper and punch me, but as I grew older I began to understand the meaning of it. Words like "ugly" and "stupid" are usually the first step of the pain process. As a kid in elementary school, we all went through being called stupid and ugly. I remember it use to hurt and we all teared up a bit, but the next day things got a little better. During middle school kids learned new vocabulary to put with the words "stupid" and "ugly." This is the time when words actually began to sting. Kids use to say things like, "You're so ugly I'm turning blind by just looking at you." or "How did you pass 7th grade when my 1st grade brother is smarter than you?" It eventually gets worse once high school starts. More people use fowl language while they insult people and they even do it online. This is known as trolling.
Trolling is anonymous person who insults a person over an internet screen. Although most trolls are anonymous, they can also have an identity. Trolls are constantly online causing harm and there's nothing a person can do about it. I've noticed trolls mostly on the blog site Tumblr. When a person post a comment on Tumblr they are able to click the button anonymous and post whatever they have to say without anyone knowing it is them. I have a friend who has been bullied over Tumblr with words by an anonymous person. My friend is a a very caring person and she use to help people she didn't even know online by listening to their problems and giving advice. She got very popular over the internet which started to catch trolls' attention. Trolls like to go after the smart, successful people and try to bring them down because they're jealous. My friend use to constantly receive insults by anonymous people every day telling her to kill herself. She didn't know who this person and whether there were more than just one, so she just ignored it. Eventually, it started to get to be too much. These trolls would tell her that she was useless and a waste of space and should just please everyone by killing herself. There was nothing she can do, so she finally gave up and deleted all her social media apps. Unlike Zelda Williams, she couldn't stay away from the internet. After about a month she came back and the threats did too. She released it was better for her to stay away from the internet for good.
Trolls never give up. They want to see the person gone. They want them to cry and hurt. Trolls are a huge cause for self harm and suicide in our society. The only way to get rid of them completely is to end the internet, but that won't happen. Society needs the internet to live in this technology based world. People need to end the pain by figuring out how to keep the trolls away without ending the internet.

  1. Wow, I never throught trolling was on the point of saying those things. But yeah, trolls are just jealous and don't give up, maybe they do if they get something back. But that might just agitate them if you keep on on there. Maybe the right thing is to just not go on the social media sites if harassment just going to keep on being there.
